So you want six pack abs. Well, doesn’t everybody? Everywhere you look you see pictures of models with perfect abs. It’s part of the human physical ideal. But is it really achievable? It is if you have some basic resources in your arsenal such as training, diet, rest, and mindset. Make no mistake about it, the most important of these weapons is your mindset. The psyche has a profound effect on all that we do and achieve in life, even in the pursuit of the perfect six pack abs. And that’s what I’ll be covering in this article.

1. Know the Reason Why

First thing you need to know is why you want six pack abs or a toned midsection. I hope appearing in a Calvin Klein advertisement isn’t your only motivation, although vanity is a very powerful one. But think of all the benefits you’ll reap from having a chiseled midsection. Make a list of all the reasons why you’re pushing this ideal. Is it to attract the opposite sex? or to have a better relationship? or to be healthier? or to feel younger? or to be stronger? or all of the above? What is it? Define it in your mind and keep it resounding in your head. This is critical because if you don’t know why, you won’t get what you’re striving for. And the longer your list, the better. All these things will keep you grounded and honest when lazyness strikes. You absolutely need to have a burning desire to achieve a toned midsection and you must know why.

2. Have a Powerful Vison

Second you need to have a crystal clear vision of the goal and constantly put it in front of you. I suggest cutting out fitness magazine images and putting them up as posters all around you, in your bathroom, in your bedroom, etc. I have a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger in my bathroom, and it may sound hokey and silly but in the end it works. It sets a clear vision and a direction for me to push myself. He’s my vision of physical greatness. And although I don’t want to compete in the Mr. Universe, I see him as a role model that’s constantly inspiring me to train harder and take care of my body. We all need role models. So put a picture of the flat abdominals god you’re aiming for. That’s right, don’t be shy about it.

3. Build a Support Base

Third, Surround yourself with people of a similar purpose and their energy and enthusiasm will rub off on you. This is a subtle principle, but a very powerful one indeed. Birds of a feather flock together, right? The stronger your community the harder it will be to become distracted and break away from your vision. You’ll also receive continual support from like minded individuals, not to mention valuable advice and knowledge that comes from sharing experiences. If you don’t know where to find a community or support group simply go to your local gym and start mingling. You’ll find many people with fitness goals there. You can also search online, where you’ll find tons of resources like social groups on facebook, or forums to connect with people who will cheer you on. 4. Stick to a Plan

Fourth, Start a plan and stick to it. Perserverance is the single most important quality in the achievement of any endeavor. Keep working at it until it sticks. You’re bound to eperience some bumps along the way, but to truly change and get that toned midsection you’ll need to tough it out for the long run. Usually, the shortest period for any type of physical transformation to occur is three months. Anything less than this is a fantasy. And if you plan to work for three months and then go back to your old ways, forget it! This needs to be a real commitment that takes hard work and sacrifice. But one that will reward you in many ways once you reach it. Just think of all the confidence, self-respect, and energy you’ll gain with your flat stomach.

5. Set Realistic Expectations

And lastly, be realistic. There are no gimmicks or shortcuts. “No pain, no gain” is as valid a maxim today as it was one hundred years ago. It’s going to be hard, you’re going to sweat, and sometimes it’s going to hurt. But I guarantee you that the satisfying feeling that comes from owning a solid midsection is unbeatable and you’ll be hooked for life. It’s like experiencing life with a new body. Focus on the result with your mind and continually take positive action. If you keep the mental discipline you’ll get the results you desire sooner than you think.
